History of the Global Positioning System (GPS)
In the 1960’s at the height of the cold war, the GPS system was designed for intelligence and military use only. It was spurred by the launch of Sputnik the Soviet spacecraft in 1957. During the 1980’s the Regan Administration opened up GPS for civilian use after a Korean Airliner with 269 people on board strayed into the prohibited airspace of the USSR and was shot down. By 1993 there were 24 satellites in orbit for GPS.
How Global Positioning System (GPS) Works
Today the Global Positioning System has over 30 navigation satellites placed into orbit high above the earth by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). A receiver picks up a signal from four or more satellites and calculates the position and time through a simple mathematical principle called trilateration. They are accurate to within a few meters. The satellites circle the earth every 12 hours in a precise orbit and transmit signal data to earth 24/7. Weather does not affect the system.
